Baby Asian Beauty Rat Snake Overview

Baby Asian beauty rat snakes are also referred to as Beauty snakes. Each baby Asian beauty rat snake for sale is born with a light yellow and olive color that changes as they mature.

This particular animal is a hybrid between a Chinese beauty snake and a Taiwanese beauty snake.

Behavior

When threatened, hognose snakes will hiss, flatten their necks and raise their heads off the ground like cobras. They sometimes feign strikes, but actual Heterodon bites are very rare. This behaviour has earned them local common names such as “puff adder”, “blowing adder”, “flathead”, “spreadhead”, “spreading adder” or “hissing adder”. Note: For Heterodon, “puff adder” is a common name inconsistent with established usage. “Puff adder” is the accepted common name of Bitis arietans, an unrelated, dangerously venomous African species of viper, which incidentally does not flatten its neck in any threat display.

If this threat display fails to deter a would-be predator, Heterodon species often roll onto their backs and play dead, going so far as to emit a foul musk and fecal matter from their cloaca (in liquid form) and let their tongues hang out of their mouth, sometimes accompanied by small droplets of blood.

If they are rolled upright while in this state, they will often roll back as if insisting they really are dead. It has been observed that the snake, while appearing to be dead, will still watch the threat that caused the death pose.

The snake will ‘resurrect’ sooner if the threat is looking away from it than if the threat is looking at the snake.

Baby Asian Beauty Rat Snake Description

Adults reach one to two meters in length and about five centimeters in girth. E. climacophora is the largest Japanese snake outside Okinawa. They are variable in color, ranging from pale yellow-green to dark blue-green.

Juveniles have brown-stripe pattern that may be mimesis of the venomous mamushi.

An albino form is known, with specimens especially numerous near Iwakuni, where they are called “Iwakuni white snakes” and revered as messengers of deities and deity-guardians of mountains and rivers.

The albino population was protected in 1924 as a “national monument.”

Japanese rat snakes eat a variety of small animals: rodents, frogs or lizards. They are good at climbing and often raid bird nests. They were favoured by farmers as effective rat control, though unpopular with chicken rearers.

In the German reptile zoo Exotarium Oberhof Elaphe climacophora mated with Elaphe schrenckii to produce fertile hybrids. Offspring look very much like Elaphe taeniura.
